Paola Balla Indigenous Artist, Curator & Consultant

Paola Balla is a Wemba-Wemba & Gunditjmara artist, curator, writer and lecturer specialising in community cultural development, Indigenous arts, education, cultural engagement and curatorial art projects. Paola is an experienced guest speaker, writer, facilitator, and award winning artist and curator. Paola is a current PhD candidate at Victoria University and lectures with Moondani Balluk Indigenous Academic Centre.

Her research focuses on Indigenous women’s art and activism and it’s role in public spaces. Her work is based on recognition of sovereignty, matriarchy and First Nations ways of being, knowing and doing in community and organisational settings, the arts and education and de-colonial processes.

Paola provides Professional Development sessions and workshops in community and organisational settings and consultancy regarding Indigenous community, arts and education engagement and projects.

Paola has over twenty years experience in the community, education and arts field, including primary to tertiary education workshops, establishing Indigenous arts programs and projects, advising and presenting to leading arts organisations including ACCA (the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art), the National Gallery of Australia’s Wesfarmers Indigenous Leadership Program, MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney) the UK’s Southbank Women of the World Festival, and delivering key note addresses at Victoria University, WOW, ACCA. Paola is regularly invited to present and facilitate events, including Generate-Working in First Nations Cultural Contexts for FCAC (Footscray Community Arts Centre) at the Emerging Cultural Leaders program at FCAC (Footscray Community Arts Centre), Next Wave Festival, ACCA, The Lifted Brow, Blak Writers Group, Writers Victoria, the Wheeler Centre, the Emerging Writers Festival, Brimbank Writers and Readers Festival and the Writing and Concepts lecture series at ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image).

Paola’s curatorial projects have been commissioned by Victoria University, the City of Melbourne, Kingston Art Gallery, Manningham City Council, Centreway Traders Group, Maroondah Council and her work has been collected by CQ University, City of Melbourne, Victoria University, Federation University and private collectors.

Currently Paola serves on the board of the Indigenous Advisory Program for FCAC, and has served on Unprojects; a leading contemporary art publication that publishes Un magazine, and the Melbourne Art Foundation which presents Melbourne Art Fair, the City of Melbourne’s Indigenous Art Panel, City of Melbourne’s Creative Strategy 2018, Creative Victoria’s annual funding program.
